Big Cartel is a platform where you can build up your own website, and it specifically aimed at creative people.
You can find out more about Big Cartel and sign up to open a store here.
Big Cartel has been around since 2005 and is marketed as an easy website builder for artists and creators.
The appearance of the stores on Big Cartel are, in our opinion, stunning. Really classy. Here is an example of a gorgeous looking knitting shop. This one is also stunning.
The prices of the items (at least for knitting) on Big Cartel seem to be at the higher end. The beautiful layouts, and the use of high quality photos will attract buyers who are willing to, and want to, pay more for high quality art. And of course your work is worth this.
Big Cartel costs from $9.99 per month up to $29.99 per month, depending on the number of listings. This is a flat fee and the company does not take a cut of the sales fee. This is different to say Etsy, where they charge a minimal fee for listing and then a percentage of the final selling fee.
Big Cartel offers a free limited feature service, where you can list five items for free, and upgrade if you like it at a later date. You can sign up for this here.
Once you set up your website and list your items, you need to start marketing and directing traffic so you can sell your items.
Instagram, Twitter, your blog, Facebook, Ebay, you can use all of these sources to get your shop known. Pinterest is also essential, I currently sell most of my knitting on Etsy and 55% of all traffic actually comes from Pinterest.
Big Cartel is a beautiful way to present your art and crafts. It is easy to set up a website there and the costs are reasonable and indeed free to start up.
